Prof. Ross Deuchar, Chris Brookmyre & Dr. Marisa Haetzman

3.00PM - 4.00PM
Virtual (Online)
Ticketed (Free)

Following on from our successful University of the West of Scotland event with journalists Kirsty Wark and Ruth Wishart at the inaugural Paisley Book Festival last year, we’re now delighted to again be part of the Festival in 2021 and warmly invite you to join UWS Criminology Professor, Ross Deuchar, in conversation with married co-authors Chris Brookmyre and Dr. Marisa Haetzman - aka Ambrose Parry.
Marisa and Chris successfully join forces and collaborate under the Ambrose Parry pseudonym in creating an exciting series of historical crime novels, featuring a dynamic detecting duo - Will Raven and Sarah Fisher - and set in Victorian Edinburgh with anaesthesia in its infancy.
Living in Scotland, Chris Brookmyre is an international bestselling and multi-award-winning author of over twenty novels. Dr. Marisa Haetzman is a consultant anaesthetist of twenty years’ experience, whose research for her Master’s degree in the History of Medicine uncovered the material upon which their Ambrose Parry novels are based.

Their first two collaborations The Way of All Flesh and The Art of Dying were both McIlvanney Prize shortlisted. With medical innovation currently a hot topic globally due to the pandemic and their anticipated co-authored third book in production, we invite you to join Marisa and Chris for this engaging UWS virtual conversation with Prof. Ross Deuchar on Sunday 21 February from 3pm - 4pm (free to attend) at Paisley Book Festival 2021.

Paisley Book Festival has become a significant part of Scotland’s rich cultural landscape. This year’s excellent line-up of writers taking part, including the 2020 Booker Prize Winner, confirms its place as a favourite for both authors and audiences. From Thursday 18 - Saturday 27 February 2021, you can listen to a fantastic array of writers from across the UK and beyond in a digital forum from the comfort of your own home. For every book sold through the Festival’s Bookshop.org page, 10% goes back to Paisley Book Festival, which will go towards promoting future programmes that will encourage reading across Renfrewshire and further afield.
In 1880, Benjamin Disraeli famously said “Keep your eye on Paisley!” Paisley has a long history of radicalism, of finding strength in facing up to and overcoming adversity in whatever shape or form it might take. The theme for the 2021 Paisley Book Festival - ‘Radical New Futures’ - emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic and the resilience and fortitude that people and communities have shown. It has also been motivated by the importance that green spaces have played as solace and recuperation over the last year, when books and reading have been a great source of comfort for so many people. Paisley Book Festival is supported by Future Paisley, a programme of economic, social and physical regeneration. The 2021 Festival is a digital forum with contributors coming from across the globe into audiences’ own homes.
In addition, the #PBF2021 Festival will host a #YoungFutures schools and learning programme by releasing a series of original videos, created by some of the UK’s most talented children and young adult authors. It will encourage school pupils across Paisley and Renfrewshire to watch these videos either at home, or in their classrooms, and engage with the authors’ ideas about what a radical future looks like to them. The Paisley Book Festival 2021 programme has something for everyone and looks forward to welcoming audiences to its digital stage.
