How did that happen?
It was opportunistic but not planned - from market girl to Provost. Lucy Meredith reflects on a lifetime of work and play as well as the importance of people, place, knowledge, experience and their contribution to a successful career. She considers the recipe for success as well as highs, lows and lessons learned along the way.
Dr Lucy Meredith joined UWS in March 2020, initially as Interim Vice-Principal PVC Learning, Teaching & Students and was then appointed to her new role of Provost & Deputy Vice-Chancellor in August 2020.
Lucy has more than 28 years of experience of academic leadership across a range of higher education settings, which has seen her fulfil the roles of Associate Head of Department, Director of Educational Partnerships, Head of Department, Dean of Faculty and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Lucy initially trained in Environmental Health and, following undergraduate and postgraduate study at the universities of Salford and Leeds, commenced a successful career in that profession. Lucy progressed to being a Senior Environmental Health Officer before taking the step into academia as a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Health with the University of the West of England (UWE).
Lucy’s academic career saw her move to Bath Spa University, before returning to UWE where she became Associate Head of Department and Faculty Director of Educational Partnerships, and then Head of Department in Applied Sciences; before moving to University of South Wales as Dean of Faculty - Computing, Engineering & Science. Immediately prior to joining UWS, Lucy held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Royal Agricultural University.
Throughout her career, Lucy has gained significant leadership experience inside and outside of higher education. She has led partnership working with a wide range of organisations - including governments and large multi-national companies - as well as leading successful overseas partnership activity across Europe, the USA, China and Africa.
Lucy is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Health, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Leadership Foundation.
