Engineering & Design Through Multispecies Collaboration: Seminar & Workshop
Tuesday 18 April 2023 from 1.30pm, UWS Paisley campus
Guest Speaker: Dr Kimia Witte - Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, University of Strathclyde
At the invitation of Professor Milan Radosavljevic, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation & Engagement at the University of the West of Scotland - Dr Kimia Witte of the University of Strathclyde will present this free seminar and workshop on the afternoon of Tuesday 18 April 2023 at UWS Paisley campus.
Entitled 'Engineering & Design Through Multispecies Collaboration', Dr Witte surmises of this session:
"With my interdisciplinary background in Fine Art, Science, Engineering and Design, I want to evolve the concept of co-engineering with nature beyond biologically inspired engineering to a more collaborative method that engages nature as a partner.
One illustration of this approach is the use of micro-organisms, particularly lichens, in the production of a 'living paint’.
This living paint has the capacity to transform concrete building facades into thriving urban forests, offering not only benefits to carbon sequestration, but also to the enhancement of biodiversity in urban areas."
Following an initial seminar presentation, Dr Witte will then lead attendees in a workshop where the breaking down of disciplinary barriers and the embracing of a transdisciplinary approach will be practiced, without being confined to any conventional methodologies, as necessary to facilitate the evolution of the concept of 'co-engineering with nature’.
Open to staff, students and guests, attendees can select whether they wish to attend the initial 1-hour Seminar (1.30pm - 2.30pm); or to also engage with the following interactive and collaborative Workshop (total duration 1.30pm - circa 4.30pm).
There is no charge to attend this event at UWS Paisley campus, but delegate places must please be registered via Eventbrite in advance.
