How to avoid Library fines and ways to pay them

UWS Library charges fines for overdue items up to a maximum of £10 per item. This is to encourage the timely return of Library loans for the benefit of all Library users.

If you incur a fine here are the charges which will be made:

  • 3 hour loans: £1 per hour
  • Standard and 1 week loans: 20p per day

For standard and 1 week loan items there is a 2 day grace period - there is no charge if overdue loans are returned within this time. After the grace period charges would be as follows:

  • Day 1: 20p (no charge if returned within grace period)
  • Day 2: 40p (no charge if returned within grace period)
  • Day 3: 60p
  • Day 4: 80p (etc up to a maximum of £10 per item)

Fines are frozen as soon as the overdue item is returned or the loan is renewed or the maximum limit of £10 per item is reached.

You can check fines on your account by logging in to My Library Card (using your student / staff username and password).

If you do incur any fines and they exceed £5 your borrowing privileges (including online renewal) will be suspended until payment is made to bring the balance below £5.

Fines can be paid by making an online payment (check amount owed prior to log-in) Lanarkshire & Paisley campuses have Self-service payment facilities (subject to availability) and at Ayr & Dumfries campuses fines can be paid at the Library Info Point.

Fines can be waived in extenuating circumstances (such as periods of illness, or other emergencies) which can be evidenced with a doctor’s note, e-mail confirmation from your lecturer, or similar.  Please contact the Library if this is the case and we’ll do our best to help you.
