Visiting and using other libraries

UWS Library aims to provide you with all resources you need for your studies at UWS.

However, we also encourage you to find out about other libraries and make the most of what they have to offer. You will find it useful if you are living some distance from UWS Library or need to access specialist resources.

British Library

The British Library (located in London and Boston Spa) is the UK's national library and has a collection of over 150 million items.

Everyone is welcome at the British Library to visit the exhibition galleries or to tour the building. However, in order to consult material and use the reading rooms you will need to apply for a Reader Pass.

Local Public Libraries

Mitchell Library

Europe’s largest central reference library, The Mitchell Library, is located in the heart of Glasgow – just a short walk from Glasgow School of Art.

As well as many reference and research collections, it houses periodicals, newspapers, maps and electronic resources. It also houses a large computing suite.

National Library of Scotland

The National Library of Scotland is Scotland's largest Library is located in the centre of Edinburgh. It is a reference library – its books are not available for loan.

NLS is also provides access to a number of useful electronic resources.

Other Library Catalogues

WorldCat is the largest library network in the world covering more than 10,000 libraries world-wide.

COPAC is a combined catalogue of the largest university libraries in the UK including Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Oxford.

SUNCAT is a comprehensive source of information about the location of print journals held in libraries throughout the UK.

InforM25 is a joined catalogue for over 120 college and university library catalogues in the London area.

Public Libraries

Visit and join your local public library and take advantage of its range of resources.

In particular, you may be able to access electronic resources in addition to those available through UWS Library.

And don’t forget about reading for pleasure.

Local library services for England and Wales 

SCONUL Access

The SCONUL Access scheme may allow you to access, or borrow from university libraries in your local area.

You will need to use your UWS email address and Library card number when applying for the scheme.

Staff should use their Library card number and not their staff username.
