Goblins and trolls took centre stage at a children’s classical music concert supported by University of the West of Scotland (UWS) students.
The creepy creations were devised by Computer Animation Arts students at UWS, who have been gaining hands-on experience in animation work as part of the University’s partnership with the Glasgow-based charity Children’s Classic Concerts (CCC).
Last month, the students created animations and graphics which were shown as part of the charity’s virtual Halloween concert, The Haunted Concert Hall.

CCC provides children and families with a fun introduction to orchestral music. The concerts are designed for children aged four to 12 and aim to inspire the next generation of performers, musicians and composers.
The annual Halloween concert, which usually takes place at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, was this year hosted online due to the current coronavirus pandemic. The event, streamed through YouTube and Facebook, has so far reached almost 30,000 viewers.
This marks the third year in which UWS students have supported the event, transforming drawings which were submitted by children on the theme of goblins and trolls into an animated sequence.
Eighteen students, with the support of lecturers Dr Mark Carey and Dr Patrick Walder, contributed to the project.

Dr Carey said: “Working with Children’s Classic Concerts gives our students hands-on experience of working on a real project for a client, and the finished product is always delivered to an incredibly high standard.
“I’m very proud of the work that our students have produced this year, and look forward to continuing our partnership with CCC at future events.”
Pippa Barnwell, General Manager at Children’s Classic Concerts, said: “The work produced by UWS’s students is such a huge part of our Halloween concert and we really do appreciate all the time and effort you spend of your own time to set it all up. The animations this year were superb. I hope we can continue this partnership in the future and look forward to planning for the next year.”
The concert is available to watch through CCC’s YouTube channel until 30 November.
This is the latest in a series of exciting opportunities for UWS’s Computer Animation Arts students, who have previously contributed to work for Glasgow Women’s Library and ReMode.
