University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has received international recognition for its outstanding contribution to the accounting profession.
The award was made by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) – the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants.
The inaugural CIMA Excellence Awards, which took place on Friday 11 December, paid tribute to those who have made a difference to the global accounting community – including UWS.
The University landed a Global Champion Award for the CIMA Prize-Winner Award. This honour is awarded to the academic partner institution that trained CIMA’s Top Student of the Year. UWS was shortlisted alongside 43 other institutions around the world, and was awarded joint-top in the UK following the outstanding exam performance of one of the institution’s postgraduate students.
Professor Dominic Elliot, Dean of the School of Business and Creative Industries at UWS, said: “Everyone at UWS is delighted to see our student and our academic team in Accounting and Finance recognised in this way by CIMA.
“It has been a source of immense pride for the University to have been so closely affiliated with CIMA for a number of years and to have their support for our professionally-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.”

UWS currently offers a BAcc in Accounting from its Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses, as well as the Finance and Accounting MSc, which runs in Paisley. Both are accredited by CIMA.
Professor Elliot added: “The School of Business and Creative Industries is committed to producing graduates of the highest quality who can make a significant contribution to their employers and industry and our close relationship with CIMA is central to this in the Accounting and Finance area. This CIMA Global Champion Award is a testament to that relationship, the hard work of our staff and the quality of our graduates.”
Andrew Harding, FCMA, CGMA, Chief Executive – Management Accounting at The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, said: “The CIMA Excellence Awards honour institutions and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the accounting profession and worked tirelessly to enrich their students, providing them with the best possible education and prepare the next generation of accounting professionals.
“The Global Champion Award received by the University of the West of Scotland is a true testament of its commitment and dedication to building the future of our profession.”
