A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate apprentice has scooped a top national award.
David Scott was named Apprentice Ambassador of the Year at Skills Development Scotland’s Scottish Apprenticeship Awards, in recognition of his championing of work-based learning as a valuable alternative to direct university entry.

David said: “An apprenticeship is a successful path to take and it should be a recognised choice as a real alternative to leaving school and going to university.
“Being an apprentice ambassador is also about advocating apprenticeships to employers, whether that's to increase the number of apprentices in a large organisation like Aviva, or encouraging other businesses to take on their first apprentice.”
David works at Aviva, on the quote and engineering platform, while working towards a BSc (Hons) IT: Software Development, through UWS’s Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) programme. Now in his fourth and final year of study, David hopes to graduate later this year.

Fiona Kennedy, Industry Engagement Manager at UWS, said: “Being awarded Apprentice Ambassador of the Year at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards is a tremendous accolade for David and recognition of the quite exceptional leadership, commitment and ambition he has demonstrated.”
The UWS Graduate Apprenticeship provides a route for individuals to complete an honours degree, while working in relevant employment. Through combining academic learning with hands-on practical experience, the GA programme delivers industry-relevant skills and qualifications that bring a wealth of benefits to both the graduate apprentice and the employer – helping to nurture and retain talent.
