As part of the preparations for UWS hosting the European College of Sport Science Congress in 2021 a team of staff and students from the School of Science of Sport attended and presented at the ECSS Dublin 2018 congress 4-7th July.

The team of six staff and four students from UWS joined some 2900 delegates from 70 countries at the second largest Sport Science conference in the world.

PhD student Mia Burleigh was awarded 4th prize for her presentation in the prestigious Gatorade Sport Science Institute award recognising outstanding research in the field of nutrition and hydration. Mia's preseatation was entitled 'The effects of chronic beetroot supplementation on nitrate reducing bacteria in the oral cavity.'

Other UWS presentations included the effects of ageing on both cardiac and endothelial function (Prof Sculthorpe & Alex Beaumont), influence of external load during whole body vibration (Dr Sanderson), variation of nitrate and nitrite concentration following ingestion of beetroot juice (Dr Easton), intra-individual variability in nitrate reducing bacteria in the oral cavity (Luke Liddle), and meta-analysis of knee rehabilitation techniques (Dalla Alqaseer).

“It's great to see UWS Sport Science have such a strong presence in Dublin and provides a great platform for us to build towards 2021 in Glasgow.”
