Overview

Relational database implementations based on 1970s-era concepts do not fit well with pervasive globally-connected information system we have today. Our group explores radical approaches including real-time mechanisms for structured and unstructured world-wide data that avoid the creation of stale data warehouses.

Databases lack inference capabilities, and are unable to find a direct or aggregated match between a query and data if this relies on contextual information. As a result, in today’s world, information is easier to share than data. We are motivated to consider the direct searching of ‘information’ and have been developing a framework for explicitly reasoning about the information content of data in a database.

Our research themes

Virtual Data Warehousing/Big Live Data

This research theme proposes a generic mechanism for loosely linking database management systems over HTTP, while assuming close cooperation between the systems in terms of secure access and schema. This mechanism tackles the well-known bottleneck of semantic heterogeneity in the mediator approach to data integration, by means of recursive information analysis. Specifically, the systems can share views of data in such a way that enables efficient real-time answers to distributed ad-hoc queries. This allows the continued management of data by its creators whereas copying the data to other locations only results in stale data warehouses.

Information Systems Analysis

This research explores semantic alignment in complex environments, using classical Soft Systems Methodology. We also look at how to make sense of complex problematic situations with a subjective and interpretive approach based upon the Weberian tradition of sociology and Hermeneutics, Soft Systems Methodology and Semiotics.

Data Management in Industry and Precision Agriculture

Both in modern engineering systems (“Industry 4.0”) and in agricultural systems we see the need for advanced data sharing and management, where data coming from sensors including drones is integrated into real-time control systems. We look at how to align manufacturing tasks and capabilities in complex situations of manufacturing for Smart Manufacturing by identifying ‘relationships of interest’, which is based up the notion of ‘informational relationship’ between components of a distributed system

Interpretive Requirements Engineering

This theme looks at the process of eliciting individual’s (and group’s) perceptions of their world from an interpretive perspective. In particular, it looks to provide support for (i) eliciting tacit/non-functional descriptions of requirements for the design of computer-based information systems and (ii) to provide a practical means of moving from interpretive inquiry to ‘user requirements’ tools (such as User Stories).

Knowledge Sharing in Virtual Communities

The social web facilitates collaboration but much of the resulting knowledge can be transient and had to capture. This work aims to develop approaches to improve the quality of collaboration in such environments.

Data Storage and Security for Cloud Computing Services

Cloud computing services are predicted to be used in everything from finance to retail and hospitality etc. industry in future. However, the development and deployment of such services have big challenges in data storage and security as they access data remotely via devices connected to the networks. This requires creation of secure environments and reduction of the chance of losing sensitive data when moving data from one device to another. This theme focuses on these challenges and aims to investigate how data storage and security can be enhanced in theory and practice for cloud computing services used in industry.
