Overview

Construction Innovation and Built Environment Research group’s research is guided by four primary goals:

  • Goal 1: Develop novel processes that will advance manufacturisation, operation and maintenance built assets.
  • Goal 2: Expand scientific understanding of the built environment, its resilience to extreme events and impact on the Earth.
  • Goal 3: Develop novel construction materials to enhance the life on Earth.
  • Goal 4: Work with policy makers, commercial and not-for-profit organisations to use our research for creating a better built environment globally.

SRC 6: Resilient & Sustainable Infrastructure Systems

  • 5G network applications to transport infrastructure systems
  • Sustainability through Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and climate change impacts (e.g., carbon footprint)
  • Roadway pavement improvement strategies
  • Mobility and safety impact predictions during construction

Key projects

  • BALI – Built Asset Lifecycle Intelligence - £100k InnovateUK feasibility study to develop a digital ecosystem for management of built assets through life (2016-2017; Prof Milan Radosavljevic).
  • Materiality, authenticity and value (MAV) - Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under the Science and Heritage call (Dr John Hughes).
  • Developing technological capacities for designing innovative cement-based materials such as high performance eco-cement and concrete with dramatically improved durability - €3.7m European research project is funded under FP7 in collaboration with Fundación Labein (project coordinater), Delft University of Technology, University of Bonn, Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja, Italcementi CTG, Bikain and BASF (Dr Wenzhong Zhu).
  • HEROMAT - Protection of Cultural Heritage Objects with Multifunctional Advanced Materials-€3.4M European 7th FP research project brought together a team from the UK, Italy, Slovenia, Serbia and Russia, including industrial SME partners (Dr John Hughes).

Name of degree: MSc Construction Management with Digital Engineering

We offer one of the most digitally advanced masters courses for the construction sector. The construction sector is undergoing a rapid technological change, which will significantly alter the way it operates. The MSc Programme in Construction Management with Digital Engineering has been developed in response to this cultural shift and to provide you with the necessary foundation to embrace digital technologies such as, Reality Capture, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Autonomous Construction Systems, Virtual/ Mixed/ Augmented Reality, Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things to name a few. The course offers a highly relevant blend of recent advances in technology along with traditional core construction management subjects.

The course is closely aligned with the knowledge and skills requirements of accreditation bodies like, Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institution of Chartered surveyors (RICS). As such, it focuses on developing work place skills demanded by employers within the wider Construction Management sector.
