Overview

Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Communications and Networks (AVCN) research Institute is one of the UWS’s strongest research hubs in terms of research outputs, intellectual property (IP), and income generation. For the past 10 years AVCN developed a strong track record in areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Extended Realities, 5G+ Networks, Big Data, Deep Learning, IoT, Blockchain, Autonomous Systems and Cyber Security, winning prestigious awards, generating research impact and IP, and securing significant grants from national and international funding agencies and industries.

AVCN is the UWS leading force for cutting-edge technology research for a sustainable future. AVCN has a proven track record of leading national and international projects from European Commission, EPSRC, Research Councils UK, Innovate UK, Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Scottish Innovation Centres and industries. Since 2014, the AVCN research institute has hosted over 40 small and large externally funded research and knowledge transfer projects, including coordinating large consortiums of EU projects. The institute has been collaborating with over 50 international partners. The AVCN has a nested structure of 6 Research Groups. We are accepting PhD and Postdoctoral Research Fellows in related research themes.

Key Project Summaries

The AVCN research institute mission is to develop disruptive technologies that impact positively on all areas of society (including health, education, industry, and inclusion), foster collaboration, sustainability, and contribute to achieving the UN SDG goals.

The AVCN institute is becoming the research leader in smart, connected, secure, and sustainable environments. Beyond5G (B5GHub) Research Group (https://beyond5ghub.uws.ac.uk) continues to be at the forefront of research in the EU and the UK, conducting cutting-edge R&D projects, developing and bringing to society the next generation network, connecting people across the world and reducing inequality.

Affective and Human Computing for Smart Environments (AHSCE) Research Group (http://ahcse.uws.ac.uk) takes a multidisciplinary approach to develop Affective and Human Computing for Smart Spaces. Its mission is to create technologies that make environments more responsive to human needs and emotions, fostering quality of living and wellbeing through technology.

Data anaLyTics for Intelligent and Autonomous Systems (DeLTA) Research Group use data analytics to address global challenges for education, finance, healthcare, and business, promoting digital preparedness for future challenges and contribute to a more sustainable world.

Advanced Laboratory for Autonomous Intelligent Systems (ALMADA) Research Group (https://www.uws.ac.uk/research/research-institutes-centres-groups/almada-research-centre/) is developing the industry infrastructure for intelligent robotic vision systems for the next generation of autonomous uncrewed air/land/sea vehicle swarms. The group is advancing UN SDGs related to climate action, sustainable cities, secure transport systems, energy, life on land and below water, and clean energy.

UWS Creative Computing Technologies (UWS CCT) Research Group (https://www.uws.ac.uk/research/research-institutes-centres-groups/creative-computing-technologies) focus on innovative and sustainable technical applications of creative computing technologies to industrial and societal issues aiming to better education, industry infrastructures, inclusion, well-being, and quality of living.

Digital Connectivity and Innovation for Sustainable Future (DCISF) Research Group is transforming the concept of future 360-degree automation in various real-time settings. Its mission is to tackle grand challenges such as climate change.
