Our Master of Education (MEd) Enhanced Educational Practice is designed for teachers and other professionals working with learners in primary, secondary and tertiary education as well as practitioners working within other educational and training contexts who are involved in the management, implementation and coordination of learning and development programmes.
All participants are required to have ongoing access to appropriate work-related opportunities within their professional context, and to reflect upon and inquire into practice during the programme, which uses practical, task-oriented material and activities. A strong emphasis is placed on research and ‘practitioner enquiry’ throughout the programme.
In broadening and enhancing your understanding of important concepts, theories and debates in education, you will also reflect on your own professional practice. You will foster critical awareness of educational methodology to enable you to evaluate the methods used in educational research, and apply critical awareness within your own research.
We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.

You should normally hold a teaching qualification or other relevant professional qualification, eg training and development and on-going practical experience of working in an educational or training setting.
Applications from interested professionals who do not hold a teaching qualification or other relevant professional qualification will be considered on the basis of a first degree in a relevant area e.g. training and development, HR, and/or on-going practical experience of/responsibility for training and development and or supporting peers and colleagues as specified above.
Applications will also be considered from holders of the following qualifications by the course leader on a case-by-case basis and through the UWS Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process:
Applications are also welcome from individuals who may have previously studied as part of an accredited Scottish Chartered Teacher programme (but who may have suspended their programme of study due to the Scottish Government’s formal withdrawal of the national Chartered Teacher scheme in February 2012) and who, may now wish to complete a Master’s level degree.
For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The qualifications below must have been gained within two years of the start of your course.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use TOEFL to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level courses. We therefore still accept TOEFL tests taken in the last two years for admission to this programme.
West African Senior School Certificate of Education (WASSCE) including acceptance of WAEC Scratchcard*
*UWS will accept a WAEC scratchcard confirming that an applicant has achieved C6 or above as evidence of meeting English language requirement from Nigeria if the student graduated within the last 5 years. After 5 years applicants would be required to provide the WAEC Certificate.

The MEd Enhanced Educational Practice programme is designed for teachers and other professionals working with learners in primary, secondary and tertiary education as well as practitioners working within other educational and training contexts who are involved in the management, implementation and coordination of learning and development programmes.
To achieve the MEd you must complete 6 taught modules (20 credits each) plus a final, single dissertation calibrated at 60 credit points; a programme total of 180 credits as follows:

The MEd Enhanced Educational Practice is delivered, administered and supported entirely online through Moodle, UWS's virtual learning environment.
Within Moodle, you will be required to remotely access all coursework (readings and activities) and, they will also be required to regularly engage with on-line and asynchronous communication with tutors and fellow participants (including the use of online discussion forum areas).
It should be noted that each 20 credit point Masters level module requires 200 ‘notional hours learning’. In order to assist you at this level of study, an overview of coursework aligned to key dates is provided during each module’s ‘orientation’ period; this approach is designed to enable individuals to plan and review their progress against the relevant timescales and deadlines at regular intervals throughout the module.
A range of formative and summative assessments are applied across the programme. Assessment details are published on each module site from the start of each term together with links to further sources of support and guidance.

Your enhanced practice and research-based skills will provide additional emphasis to your professional standing and employment opportunities in relevant sectors.
Following successful completion of our MEd in Enhanced Educational Practice you would be able to undertake further study towards PhD or EdD level.
From a Scottish perspective, this practice-based programme is aligned with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) Standard for Career-long Professional Learning. Therefore, teachers located in Scotland can use modules studied as part of the programme towards their GTCS Professional Update portfolio.

Students on certain degrees will incur some additional costs not covered by their tuition fees. These could be for things like specialist equipment, study materials, work placements, graduation, membership of relevant organisations or costs related to carrying out fieldwork.
For students on course with an element of fieldwork, there may also be extra costs for travel and accommodation.

As the MEd is delivered, administered and supported entirely online, there is an expectation that participants will have access to a reliable internet connection. Additionally, there is an expectation that participants will have regular access to an appropriate internet connected device which will enable full engagement with, and the development of, work at Masters' level; participants will need to use word processing and, on occasion, other common file formatting software packages to enable engagement with aspects of the programme. An indication of the minimum technical specification(s) is available on request.
Consideration of current and recent literature is required throughout the programme as a means of linking theoretical perspectives to professional practice. Set and optional reading is therefore an integral part of coursework, and participants are also expected to source additional literature which is of direct relevance to their professional context. Fully enrolled participants have access to a range of resources and services offered by UWS’ Library, and although every effort is made to supply module specific texts books in e-book format, it is not always possible. Therefore, some students may prefer to purchase their own copies of text books. Students are advised to liaise with the Course Leader when considering this course of action so as to receive advice and/or an up-to-date module reading list (as reading lists are updated regularly throughout an academic session where possible and applicable).
Tuition fees are calculated based on where you are from and what you are studying. Some courses also involve additional costs, such as mandatory field trips, equipment or studying abroad.
Scottish students studying at postgraduate level at UWS are entitled to various funds and support towards tuition fees and living costs.

UWS administer a range of discretionary and childcare funds. These are designed to support students who are experiencing financial difficulty or struggling to meet the costs of childcare.
Becoming a student can have an impact on your entitlement to certain benefits. It may mean you are no longer eligible to claim a benefit you have been receiving, or your new income from student funding may affect the amount you are able to receive.
If there isn’t a statutory source of funding for you or your course, or you are in need of additional financial support, you may wish to consider more alternative sources of funding such as trust funds and scholarships.
