The IT Essentials course prepares you for the following:

Audience & Entry Requirements

Anyone who want to pursue a career in IT and learn how computers work, how to assemble computers, and how to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.

The curriculum covers the basics of computers, mobile device hardware, and software, while introducing advanced security and networking concepts and the responsibilities of an IT professional.

Entry Requirements

  • Basic computer literacy
  • Basic Internet usage skills
  • Basic PC operating system navigation skills

Course content

Comptia: IT Essentials comprises 14 modules delivered over 10 weeks, evening training sessions.

Modules

  • Module 1: Introduction to the Personal Computer system, form factors, internal and external components
  • Module 2: Safe Lab Procedures and proper use of tools
  • Module 3: Assemble the computer, boot process, upgrade and configure
  • Module 4: Overview of Preventative Maintenance and troubleshooting methodologies
  • Module 5: Types of operating systems, Windows Installation, boot files and registry
  • Module 6: Windows GUI, Control Panel, client-side virtualisation, O/S Maintenance
  • Module 7: Networking Concepts, standards, components and technologies
  • Module 8: Connecting to Lans, Wans, ISPs and the Internet, network Troubleshooting
  • Module 9: Laptops and Mobile Devices, components, configuration and maintenance
  • Module 10: Mobile, Linux and OS X Operating systems, securing mobile devices, troubleshooting
  • Module 11: Printer features, installing and sharing printers, maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Module 12: Security threats, procedures, preventative technologies
  • Module 13: Communication skills and the IT Professional, ethical and legal issues, Call centre technicians
  • Module 14: Advanced Troubleshooting for computer components, operating systems, networks and security

Comptia Testing & Additional Costs

Exams need to be booked and paid for separately via a Pearson VUE testing centre.
