All research in the School of Science and Sport is coordinated through the Institute for Clinical Exercise and Health Science (ICEHS) and the Institute for Biomedical and Environmental Science (IBEHR) which are internationally recognised and were rated as producing world-leading and internationally excellent research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The Centre for Musculoskeletal Science brings together wide-ranging biomedical and physiology expertise with clinical and enterprise links to focus on key global societal health challenges including arthritis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). With expertise in inflammatory pathways and immunology, PAR receptors, vascular function, in vivo disease models, tissue remodelling, microcomputed tomography, cellular signalling and gene regulation, the centre is a key player in national and international funded research partnerships e.g. Arthritis Research UK Programme (£1.2M) A major collaborative research programme to investigate protease activated receptor 2 (PAR2) roles in osteoarthritis; BREATH: Border and Regions Airways Training Hub (€7.7M) – A cross-border, collaborative EU-funded doctoral training programme focussed on COPD research.
The Centre for Environmental Research is actively involved in research, enterprise and engagement in the areas of sustainability and environmental research and management. With expertise in aquaculture and fish health and welfare, waste and waste water treatment (municipal and industrial), waste management, sustainable mining practices (including hydraulic fracturing or fracking) soil quality and health, urban environments and climate change, staff are actively involved in externally funded research with national and international partners and industry (e.g. Stemcor, Arcelor Mittal, Tata, EU commission, NATO, British Council, MARS, DEFRA, WRAP, Hydroklear Services, NERC).
This research group undertakes key pharmaceutical, biomedical, environmental and materials science research.
The Group’s research is multifaceted, interdisciplinary and highly collaborative, contributing towards pharmaceutical, biomedical, environmental, materials and formulation science, with strong links to engineering, physics and healthcare. Group activity is underpinned through established industrial links (e.g. Sudarshan, BASF, Polaroid, PBS, Clariant AG, GMI/WEEE Scotland) and external funding (EPSRC, Innovate UK, OGIC, Royal Society). Current research in physical sciences includes development of π-conjugated materials for advanced high performance optical and optoelectronic applications, synthesis, characterisation and functionalisation of biomaterials, natural materials, nanomaterials and responsive polymers for medical and industrial applications and the isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive marine and terrestrial-derived microbial natural products. Mathematics and theoretical research includes modelling of physical and biological processes such as liquid crystal devices for displays and sensors, novel ultrasonic devices, heat flow in novel welding techniques, nutrient flow in fish and amphibian egg masses and mathematical ecology.
Research activity encompasses a number of areas spanning medical and environmental applications. These include host-pathogen interactions, new medicines for neglected and tropical diseases, diagnostics, reproductive immunology, medical devices for cell manipulation. Staff are also research at the interface between the environment and human and animal health, specifically studying infectious disease transmission and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Many projects include collaborators from both the Health Service and Industry and are impact driven. For example, research on pathogenic free-living amoebae involves collaborating with ophthalmologists and the eyecare industry to discover new effective medicines for the sight-threatening pathogen, Acanthamoeba. Research with the aquaculture industry is investigating Paramoeba, which causes amoebic gill disease and a huge economic burden to many countries.
The Clinical Exercise, Nutrition and Environment Research Group has a breadth of research expertise which focuses on the health effects of physical activity. Staff are currently involved in a variety of projects including: the development and evaluation of school based interventions to increase childhood physical activity and to reduce obesity; work with industry to develop digital health platforms to improve patient treatment (government funded); industry funded projects assessing the interaction between the human micro-biome and dietary nitrate supplementation; studies on the role of small molecules produced by the gut microbiome in human health; ultrasound assessment of cardiac and vascular function both in elderly and paediatric populations; and the use of exercise as a treatment option in clinical populations such as in patients with multiple sclerosis (government funded). The team also includes qualified physiotherapists and a biomechanist who have research interests in rehabilitation, and biomechanics evaluation of performance both in sports performance and health contexts.
The Group’s research explores the development and delivery of sport from participation to performance, through the key themes of gender and equality, community sport and physical activity, applied sport performance, and coach education and practitioner development. The team has a broad range of expertise across the fields of sport psychology, sociology, physical activity, management, pedagogy, coaching education and practice, tourism, and development pathways. Current projects include work in women’s boxing, walking football, masculinity and bodybuilders, curling and communities, falls prevention, use of fitness apps, sport psychologist training and development, coaching philosophies and development, performance analysis, and strength and conditioning in football.
