The University of the West of Scotland was the first Scottish institution to offer a Human Resource Management (HRM) Undergraduate programme with professional accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The programme’s education continues to meet the highest professional standards within HRM.
With successful completion of the Honours Degree, students will obtain the Level 5 (Intermediate) CIPD qualification, and gain the eligibility to be a CIPD Associate Member.1

The BA(Hons) Business & HRM programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop requisite knowledge, critical thinking and professional skills. Underpinned by academic theory, the programme will prepare graduates for the workplace, ready to start their careers as HRM professionals or enter postgraduate studies.

What qualifications do you need?
Scottish, UK, EU and international students are all considered on an individual basis. A range of factors are considered when assessing applications, and alternative combinations of qualifications and experience are accepted.
As a Widening Access & Participation University, we can other students accelerated entry. This can give students the opportunity to enter into second or third year, depending on qualifications. Due to the professional accreditation of the programme, direct fourth year entry is unavailable.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The qualifications below must have been gained within two years of the start of your course.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum English language requirements have the option to study one of our preparatory and pre-sessional English courses. The UWS courses available are:

With the BA Business & Human Resource Management, you will gain a mix of specialist and transferable skills essential for a career in business and HRM. A variety of teaching and learning approaches are used, including lectures, tutorials and workshops, all of which are focused on the practical aspects of business and human resources.
High quality and experienced teaching staff, supported by industry guest speakers, will deepen your understanding of business and HRM. Tutors will help you to navigate the range of career options and professional accreditations that will be available to you upon completion of the programme.
Develop a broad understanding of human resource management (HRM) and its importance within successful organisations. You will gain overviews of key business disciplines and the business environment; as well as developing employability skills essential to launching your career.
Year 1 modules include:
Introducing People Management: Foundational understanding of key areas within HRM;
HRM in Business Context: The role of HRM in organisations;
General Business Modules: Including areas such as accounting, marketing and economics.
Further develop your knowledge and understanding of HRM by studying various HRM-based core modules. Optional business modules will help you develop an understanding of management knowledge and skills.
Year 2 modules include:
Talent Management: Key approaches to learning, development & training;
Facilitation Skills: Skills development for leading meetings and workshops;
HR Professional Practice: Focus on professional skills development in HRM;
HR Service Delivery: HR contributions to organisations.
Discover and learn the critical role of employment relations and the strategic part HRM plays within organisations, as well as performance and reward management. Fundamental research skills will be developed in preparation for year 4 and professional practice.
Year 3 modules include:
Performance & Reward: Approaches to managing performance and rewarding staff;
HRM Research Design: Key skills in developing and conducting research;
Employment Relations: Explore the relationship between staff and the organisation.
The final year of study includes completing a research dissertation on a topic of your choice, as well as various HRM-related subjects.
Year 4 modules include:
Equality & Diversity: Understanding equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace;
The HR Function: Advanced understanding of HRM’s contribution to organisations;
HR Strategy: Understanding the strategic role of HR in organisations;
International HRM: Understanding the national and international context of HRM.
Learning a language (Optional)
The BA(Hons) Business & HRM also gives you the flexibility to choose a language module which can count towards your degree. These modules cover ten languages and range from beginner to fluent speaker level.
Teaching & Assessment
Teaching is conducted through traditional lectures and small-group workshops and tutorials.
As part of the programme, you will have the opportunity to participate in group projects and independent learning. Both styles of learning will help develop your transferable skills in areas such as research, presenting, communication and team working.
The programme’s modules utilise a variety of assessment methods and tools, including:

Written examinations and multiple-choice tests
Role-play assessments and poster presentation.
The BA (Hons) Business & HRM programme is designed around the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), with a focus on developing valuable graduate attributes to ensure our students are industry-ready on completion of the degree.
Upon completion of the programme, our graduates are equipped with the professional knowledge, skills and understanding to pursue careers within human resources. The business modules arm our graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to explore careers in general organisation management.
Recent Business & Human resource management graduates are employed across the public, private and third sector in industries such as recruitment, NHS, BP, IKEA and local authority.
UWS offers various postgraduate qualifications which can help graduates further develop their knowledge and understanding of business and HRM. MSc HRM & Pathways, MSc International Management, and Master of Business Administration (MBA) are only a few of the options available to graduates of the BA(Hons) Business & HRM programme.
Graduates looking to pursue research or education may wish to consider an academic career and apply for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree.

Students on certain degrees will incur some additional costs not covered by their tuition fees. These could be for things like specialist equipment, study materials, work placements, graduation, membership of relevant organisations or costs related to carrying out fieldwork.

Tuition fees are calculated based on where you are from and what you are studying. Some courses also involve additional costs, such as mandatory field trips, equipment or studying abroad.
There are several scholarship and incentive schemes available to international students studying at undergraduate level at UWS, as well as support to meet the costs of childcare and various sources of additional funding.
Becoming a student can have an impact on your entitlement to certain benefits. It may mean you are no longer eligible to claim a benefit you have been receiving, or your new income from student funding may affect the amount you are able to receive.
If there isn’t a statutory source of funding for you or your course, or you are in need of additional financial support, you may wish to consider more alternative sources of funding such as trust funds and scholarships.

The on-time application deadline for 2020/21 entry is 15 January 2020, 18:00 (UK time). For some courses it may still be possible to apply beyond this period, subject to suitable vacancies remaining. The final deadline for late applications via UCAS is 30 June 2020, 18:00 (UK time). Beyond this deadline, you may be able to apply via ‘UCAS Clearing’ if the course you are interested in has remaining places.
Students from non-EU/non-EEA countries can apply directly to UWS via our dedicated online application system. The latest we can process your application is 6 weeks before the course start date to allow for visa processing times.
