The BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Education will provide you with both the extensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills in mathematics and statistics as well as professional skills through work-based learning to ensure you are fully equipped to meet the demands of being a Mathematics teacher in secondary (high) school.
The overall aim of the course is to allow you to develop the knowledge and skills required to teach Mathematics at Secondary School level. You will study mathematics to Honours level, and will also develop your teaching skills in years 3* and 4 by taking modules in Education and practical teaching placements in a school.
On successful completion of the course you will have met the Standard for Provisional Registration, and thus be eligible to apply for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and entry to the Teacher Induction Scheme in Scotland as a secondary school teacher of Mathematics. Your depth of knowledge across a broad range of topics will support the teaching of senior phase courses up to SQA Advanced Higher (or GCSE A-level) level.
*Higher English or equivalent needed to progress into year 3 of the programme (alternative route available).
The course prepares you to be both a Mathematician and and an Educational Practitioner.
You will be taught the fundamentals of Mathematics and Statistics as a core science and computer laboratory sessions develop practical and communication skills. Across the four years of the course, increasingly complex understanding of Mathematics and Statistics, viz. Algebra, Calculus, Probability & Statistics, is developed.
The study of Education is introduced in year three with a focus on key educational issues, cross-cutting curricular themes, contexts for learning and professional values. Knowledge and understanding of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment of secondary Mathematics, and the skills and abilities to implement effective teaching and learning, are developed in year four, through campus teaching and school experience placements.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The qualifications below must have been gained within two years of the start of your course.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use TOEFL to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level courses. We therefore still accept TOEFL tests taken in the last two years for admission to this programme.
West African Senior School Certificate of Education (WASSCE) including acceptance of WAEC Scratchcard*
*UWS will accept a WAEC scratchcard confirming that an applicant has achieved C6 or above as evidence of meeting English language requirement from Nigeria if the student graduated within the last 5 years. After 5 years applicants would be required to provide the WAEC Certificate.

This programme aims to instil you with the skills and attributes that are transferable to other areas of study and professional employment. These include:
In Year 1 you will study core modules in Mathematics and Statistics, and a module in Professional Skills.
In Year 2, you will study more advanced core modules in Mathematics and Statistics which follow from those studied in Year 1.
In Year 3, alongside specialist core and option modules in Mathematics and Statistics, the study of Education is introduced with a focus on key educational issues, cross-cutting curricular themes, contexts for learning and professional values.
Knowledge and understanding of advanced Mathematics, alongside curriculum, pedagogy and assessment of Mathematics, and the skills and abilities to implement effective teaching and learning, are developed in Year 4, through campus teaching and school experience placements.
The course will allow you to develop Honours-level knowledge and skills in Mathematics and Statistics. You will also be eligible to apply for provisional registration with GTCS, and entry to the Teacher Induction Scheme as secondary school teachers of Mathematics and Statistics.
You will also have the option to work in finance, research, engineering industries and many other fields, since mathematics graduates are highly sought after in all areas due to their analytical skills.
The GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration is part of a suite of educational professional standards published in 2012. Individuals obtaining Provisional Registration aim to progress to Full Registration and are then expected to continue to develop their expertise through appropriate and sustained career long professional learning. The suite of professional standards may be used to guide this learning and includes, for example, the Standards for Leadership and Management. Non-award-bearing courses have always formed an important part of professional development and update for teachers, but many opportunities exist at Masters level and above in subjects and areas relevant to schools and the wider world of education.
Honours graduates may choose to pursue further study of Mathematics and/or Statistics through Masters or Doctoral programmes at this or other universities.
