At UWS Wednesday afternoon is allocated as free from classes for the majority of programmes. This is to ensure that students have the opportunity to take part in sports and social activities. Whether your sporting interest is in competitive sport, or recreational programmes of health and fitness, we’ve got something for you. With over 20 competitive and recreational sports providing opportunities to compete, to train and to socialise, there has never been a better time to become part of Team UWS.
If you want to learn more about our existing teams then take a look in the contact us section below, where you will find links to club Facebook pages.
Team UWS are always keen to add new sports clubs and activities to our programmes and we are proactive in developing links with local sports clubs and organisations to support the development of sport at UWS.
In addition to team sports we also support individual athletes representing the university in a range of sports including; athletics, karate, squash, swimming, gymnastics and curling.

Throughout the year there are a number of student competitions open to individual competitors. You can find details of these by visiting the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) and British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) events webpages. To enquire about support towards competing in individual events please contact email@example.com
UWS students engage in a wide range of sports competitions, ranging from national championships to regional leagues and events. BUCS and SSS leagues and championships provide opportunities to represent the University in competition. Many UWS students also access externally organised sports competitions and events through local sports clubs and performance programmes.
BUCS and SSS leagues and championships provide opportunities to represent the University in competition. Within these leagues our teams compete against other colleges and universities from around the UK, with fixtures generally taking place on Wednesday afternoons and weekends.
One of the highlights of the Team UWS competitive calendar is the BUCS National Indoor Championships. With over 6000 students from institutions from all across the UK making their way to Sheffield to compete across three days of sport. UWS students have competed across a range of sports in recent years, including badminton, swimming, athletics, karate, judo and climbing.
As well as training and competing with our Team UWS sport clubs, there is a wide range of volunteering opportunities such as joining a club committee, the Team UWS Sports Executive Committee, coaching, and officiating. You can find more about these opportunities by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org
Additionally, we have recently established the Team UWS Volunteering scheme, which offers the opportunity to volunteer with Team UWS across a number of roles which aim to support the development of our teams and provide you with a chance to gain experience. Whether you’re a photographer, journalist, sport scientist, or have another skill set that could help develop Team UWS, then we want to work with you and support your development. To register your interest, you can sign up at Team UWS Volunteering.
If competitive sport is not what you are looking for then there are plenty of recreational offers available at Team UWS. Working in partnership with UWS sports facilities, there is an extensive range of fitness classes for you to participate in. Our recreational sport schedule is just as busy as our competitive one, with many special events as well as regular sessions for recreational sport. 2019 saw the introduction of “Rec. Friday” at the Robertson Sport Centre in Paisley and the gym hall at the Ayr Campus. These are weekly slots that rotate around different sports each week to allow students to keep active in a less competitive, social manner, as well as playing host to special ‘come and try’ events, such as Ultimate Frisbee and water sports.
Team UWS Clothing
There is a range of Team UWS leisurewear and accessories available for purchase. Many items can be personalised with team name and initials and new items are added periodically. Items can be viewed and ordered via the dedicated Team UWS Online Store, hosted by our sportswear partner O’Neills International Sportswear.
Each spring Team UWS hosts their annual Sports Ball. The event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the year’s successes and achievements, and always proves to be one of the highlights of the sports year at UWS. The honours awarded on the evening include Team of the Year, as well as individual awards such as Colours and Blues.
Each year the Team UWS Sports Ball proves to be bigger and better than before. Tickets go on sale in January each year via the UWS online store.
