As a result of the UK leaving the European Union the automatic recognition of UK teaching qualifications in the EEA will no longer apply for qualifications obtained after 31 December 2020. This means that UK nationals wishing to teach in the EEA and EEA citizens with a UK teaching qualifications will require to have their qualification recognised in the EEA country in which they intend to work. The rules and process for this recognition of third country qualifications/third-country nationals will vary and any student interested in working in the EEA after qualifying should check the relevant requirements in each member state.
The BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Education will provide you with both the extensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills in chemistry and professional skills through work-based learning to ensure you are fully equipped to meet the demands of being a Chemistry teacher in secondary (high) school.
The overall aim of the course is to allow you to develop the knowledge and skills required to teach Chemistry at Secondary School level. You will study Chemistry to Honours level, and will also develop your teaching skills in years 3 and 4 by taking modules in Education.
On successful completion of the course you will have met the Standard for Provisional Registration, and thus be eligible to apply for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and entry to the Teacher Induction Scheme as a secondary school teacher of Chemistry with Science. Your depth of knowledge across a broad range of topics will support the teaching of senior phase courses up to SQA Advanced Higher (or GCSE A-level) level.
The BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Education is professionally recognised by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). By successfully completing this course you will meet the Standard for Provisional Registration as a secondary school teacher of chemistry with science.
Graduates receive the formal teaching qualification necessary for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Graduates from this course are eligible for a one-year paid induction post that enables completion of probation and achievement of the standard required for full registration with the GTCS in a Scottish secondary school.
You’ll also have the knowledge and practical skills required for a career in drug research, environmental analysis, forensic science and much more.

Before progressing to Year 3, students must meet English and Maths requirements, complete a successful interview with the UWS School of Education & Social Sciences and apply for and obtain membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme before enrolment.
The course teaches the fundamentals of chemistry as a core science and laboratory sessions develop practical and communication skills. Across the four years of the course, increasingly complex understanding of principal aspects of Chemistry – organic, inorganic, analytical and physical – is developed.
Depth of knowledge across a broad range of topics supports the teaching of senior phase courses up to SQA Advanced Higher (or GCSE A-level) level.

In Year 1, you will study core modules in chemistry and option modules in mathematics, physics, physics, or forensic science, this provides the option to pursue one area further, which, as you progress through the programme, will support your delivery of general science in the broad general education phase of the secondary curriculum.
During this year you will cover general aspects of chemistry including organic, inorganic and physical chemistry along with two other science subjects. Laboratory sessions develop practical and communication skills. Students study a range of core and option modules, the core modules include the following: Structure of Chemistry, Chemistry and Reactions, and Scientific Investigation.
Students are required to take five core chemistry modules, designed to extend their knowledge of the traditional subject areas of inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical chemistry, in addition to introducing aspects of applied chemistry, spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry. Each of the modules contain both practical and coursework components allowing students to develop, practice and demonstrate a wide range of professional skills.
The core modules include the following: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Laboratory Techniques, Inorganic Chemistry, and Chemical Analysis and Evaluation. The option module can be chosen from such as Forensic Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Computing.
The study of education is introduced in Year 3 with a focus on key educational issues, cross-cutting curricular themes, contexts for learning and professional values.
You will study chemistry modules that provide a foundation for the remaining honours year, as well as dealing with applied chemistry issues, the modules you will study include the following: Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and School & Professional Studies (L9). Progression to SCQF Level 9 is available to students who fulfil the university progression requirements and the GTCS requirements for entry to programmes of initial teacher education.
Knowledge and understanding of curriculum, pedagogy and
assessment of chemistry and general science, and the skills and abilities to implement effective teaching and learning, are developed in Year 4 through campus teaching and school experience placements.
You will study the following modules: Organic Chemistry, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry 4, Secondary STEM Subject Studies, and Secondary School Experience.
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and guided laboratory work.

Dissertation & poster presentation (Mandatory)
Your final year dissertation is a core and mandatory piece of research undertaken in your final year of studies. However, only electronic copies are required to be submitted for assessment. You may wish to print bound copies, but this is not mandatory. Depending upon the size of the dissertation and the content it can cost anything between £15-40. Research posters are developed as part of your final year studies but these are electronic versions only and do not need to be printed for assessment.
Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme Membership (Mandatory)
You must join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. This helps ensure people whose behaviour makes them unsuitable to work with children and protected adults cannot do 'regulated work' with these vulnerable groups. If you are applying to become a member of the scheme for the first time, the fee is currently £59. If you are already a member of the scheme you will need to have a record update processed through an Existing PVG Scheme Member Application.
