What is the Technician Commitment?
The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative, led by a steering board of sector bodies, hosted by the UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy.
The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.

UWS and the Technician Commitment
UWS proudly became signatories of the Technician Commitment in September 2024, reaffirming its dedication to supporting and advancing the careers of its technical staff across all campuses.
Following this commitment, UWS institutional lead Dr James Thompson (CEPS), Technical Co-lead Marie Anne Pringle (HLS), and administrative lead Kim Wight (HLS) have led on a number of activities, including a comprehensive series of roadshows to capture insights from the university’s technical community. This consultation informed the establishment of a Short Life Working Group, composed of volunteers from every School within UWS, tasked with developing the UWS Technician Commitment Action Plan.
The Action Plan aims to highlight the vital contributions of technical colleagues, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensure that technical professionals’ voices are integral to strategic decision-making at all levels of the institution. The plan is structured around the four key pillars of the Technician Commitment: Visibility, Recognition, Career Development, and Sustainability.
