Ayrshire residents with a passion to share or a conversation to start are being offered the chance to host their own radio show.
UWS Radio is inviting local people to an information and training day at University of the West of Scotland’s (UWS) Ayr campus on Wednesday 14 October,10am-4pm, where they can meet the team, discover how the station works and explore ideas for their own programme.
Whether it’s sharing favourite music, discussing a lifelong interest or giving local people and organisations a platform, the team is keen to hear from anyone curious about taking to the airwaves. And you don’t need a connection to the University or a fully formed idea for a show.
Chris Gilgallon, who is part of the team leading the day alongside, said: “Lots of people have probably listened to the radio and thought they’d like to give it a go. This is an opportunity to find out what’s involved and talk to us about what you’d like to do.
You don’t need broadcasting experience or technical knowledge to get started. Bring your enthusiasm, your interests and any questions you have. We can help you take the next step.
Based at UWS’s Ayr campus, the station broadcasts 24 hours a day on DAB and online. Community volunteers are already a longstanding part of the station, with some presenters having been involved for more than ten years.
Station Manager and Fourth-year UWS student, Gemma Trainor, is keen to build on those local connections. Gemma said: “One of the lovely things about radio is hearing someone share something they really care about. There are so many people across Ayrshire with interests, stories and ideas that could make a great show.
We’d love to welcome some new voices to UWS Radio. If you’re curious but a bit nervous, come along and have a chat. You don’t have to turn up ready to go live!
The day will include introductory chats, workshops and training to help prospective volunteers learn more about presenting and developing a programme. Additional training days can be arranged if demand is high.
Anyone interested in having their own show – or who knows someone who might be – is encouraged to email uwsradio@gmail.com to register their interest and find out more.
