The former Chief Executive of NHS Scotland spoke about the future of health and social care at a prestigious lecture series returning to University of the West of Scotland.
Taking place on Wednesday 8 November at UWS’s Lanarkshire campus, Professor Derek Feeley addressed an audience of delegates and answered the question: “where next for health and social care?” as part of the University’s Brough Lecture series.
Professor James Miller, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “Derek delivered a fascinating lecture, which provided us all a glimpse, not only into his impressive career history, but his predictions for the future of an incredibly important aspect of the Scottish, UK, and global health sector.
As the largest provider of undergraduate nursing in the Scottish higher education sector, and as a University with a dynamic School of Health and Life Sciences, training the next generation of health and social care workers, Derek’s insights were incredibly valuable to our community.

As well as being the former Chief Executive of NHS Scotland, Derek is a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), where he latterly held the role of President and Chief Executive.
On his return to Scotland in 2020, he was appointed as Chair of the Independent Review of Adult Social Care, which reported to the Scottish Government in February 2021.
In his role as Chief Executive of NHS Scotland, he was the principal advisor to the Scottish Government on all health, health care, and social care policy matters, as well as having leadership responsibility for NHS Scotland’s 140,000 staff. Professor Feeley is now a Honorary Lecturer at UWS.
The University of the West of Scotland’s Brough Lecture commemorates Peter Brough, the Paisley businessman, whose bequest to the town in the 19th century provided funds for his trustees to establish the original Paisley Technical School, on which UWS is based.
