Renowned musician, songwriter and former UWS lecturer Jim Prime has sadly passed away, aged 64, following a short battle with cancer. Jim, best known as the longtime keyboardist and co-writer with Scottish band Deacon Blue, was also a much-loved academic who taught at UWS from 2001 until his retirement in 2024.
Jim joined UWS in 2001 and was instrumental in establishing the BA (Hons) Commercial Music degree, helping it grow into one of the University’s most successful and respected programmes. Over his 23-years with us, Jim brought a rare blend of academic insight and real-world industry experience to his teaching, sharing his knowledge across performance, theory, and the business of music in a way that deeply enriched the student experience.
Outside the classroom, Jim was celebrated as the gifted keyboardist and songwriter with the iconic Scottish band Deacon Blue. Formed in the mid-1980s, the band became one of Scotland’s most enduring musical success stories, with Jim’s musicianship and creative voice at the heart of their sound. He was a key collaborator on many of their most loved songs, including Fergus Sings the Blues, Loaded, and Queen of the New Year.
Jim was an exceptional colleague whose impact on our students and our curriculum cannot be overstated. He combined his outstanding musical career with a real passion for education, helping generations of students believe in their own potential. His loss will be deeply felt across the School and beyond.
Professor Kasim Sheikh, Dean of the School of Business and Creative Industries
Jim’s warmth and humour were as memorable as his musical talents. At Ayr Campus, his easy laughter and quick wit brought joy to those around him and the stories and smiles he shared with colleagues became part of life in BCI.
Jim was one of those rare people whose talent was matched only by his generosity of spirit. He was my friend and colleague for many years. We shared so much, musical adventures, creative conversations, and plenty of laughs. His passing leaves a big gap and we’ll miss him greatly.
David Scott, Head of the Division of Arts and Media, fellow musician and friend.
Following his retirement from UWS in 2024, Jim continued to tour and record with Deacon Blue, with his final performances taking place earlier this year.
Jim was a funny, talented, caring person who brought so much to our students, our colleagues, and to Scottish music. He will be deeply missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former students, and bandmates at this very sad time.
