Three Renfrewshire primary schools have welcomed international teaching students from Czechia, Ukraine, China and France into their classrooms.
Todholm Primary, West Primary, and Wallace Primary welcomed five students from the University of West of Scotland’s (UWS) English Language and Teaching English to Students of Other Languages courses.
During their voluntary placements, students become active contributors to the classroom. They primarily observe and assist with guided language activities in their mother tongue, including songs, games, storytelling, and cultural lessons. They also contribute to all curricular disciplines – such as arts, music, maths, science, history, and PE – through appropriate teaching exercises and extra-curricular activities. Students are also encouraged to deliver workshops about their own country and culture.
David Rigmand, Headteacher at Wallace Primary School, said, “We have loved having the students in our school. They were so helpful, keen and friendly. They got involved in all aspects of school and we were so sad to see them go.”
Si Chen, a BA English Language year 3 student who volunteered at Todholm Primary School, said, “My time at Todholm Primary has been an unforgettable learning experience, and I am truly grateful for the warm welcome and support I received from everyone. Working alongside the Primary 7 class was especially rewarding. The pupils' energy, curiosity, and kindness made every moment a joy. A particular highlight was teaching them basic Mandarin, which reinforced my passion for language education and strengthened my confidence in my dream of becoming a primary school teacher.
“Beyond the P7 classroom, I enjoyed contributing in diverse ways: helping with P1 support, joining PE sessions, assisting in the library, visiting the lovely beehives, and supporting small group maths sessions—including sharing some Chinese maths skills. Participating in STEM sessions and observing the children's creativity during loose parts play were also inspiring, deepening my appreciation for hands-on learning.”
“We’re very grateful to Todholm Primary, West Primary and Wallace Primary for their continuing support and assistance in accommodating and welcoming our students for voluntary placements. It allows our students to get immersed into the local culture of the community, and to get a good insight into Scottish education, which will be very useful when they go back to their home institutions and for their future professional careers. It’s also an invaluable opportunity for our students to improve their language skills.”
