A contemporary Scottish romantic comedy written by University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate Kevin Walls has been released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland.

Set in Glasgow, “Premature” follows two flatmates navigating an unexpected pregnancy after a one-night stand. Blending humour with honest, character-driven storytelling, the film explores ambition, self-determination and unpredictability through a millennial lens.

Kevin, who wrote, directed and produced the film, said: “Premature is a romantic comedy, but at its heart it’s a coming-of-age film about two millennials who aren’t quite fully formed.

Everything I learned about copyright and intellectual property at UWS enabled me to license songs for the film and allowed me to approach record labels and music publishers with confidence.

“We made Premature to connect with audiences, so bringing it to cinemas is incredibly exciting. This has been a truly collaborative effort, and we can’t wait for people to experience it together on the big screen.”

Graduating from the BA (Hons) Commercial Music programme at UWS Ayr Campus, Kevin is a BAFTA New Talent award-winning producer, screenwriter, director, actor, and multi-skilled filmmaker based in Glasgow, Scotland.

“There’s so much I learned during my undergraduate degree that became vital when I was making the film,” continued Kevin.

“For example, everything I learned about copyright and intellectual property at UWS enabled me to license songs for the film and allowed me to approach record labels and music publishers with confidence.”

Shot in the greater Glasgow area across 23 days in the summer of 2025, Kevin returned to Ayrshire to shoot the closing sequence of the film at the University’s Ayr Campus.

Kevin funded the initial production himself through savings from his freelance work before additional support helped take the film through post-production and into cinemas.

Glasgow Caledonian University’s Entrepreneurial Hub provided £5,000 in seed funding towards the costs of the theatrical release.

“Premature” then hit cinemas on Friday 18 September, with screenings at venues including Odeon, Showcase, Omniplex, Cineworld, Picturehouse and independent cinemas.

It marks the debut feature film of independent Scottish film production and distribution company, Sonorous Films.

When meticulous, career-obsessed Cameron (played by James Rottger) discovers his aimless flatmate Eilidh (played by Elle Watson) is pregnant after their drunken one-night stand, both assume there is an obvious way out.

But when Eilidh finds she cannot go through with the termination, the pair are forced into an awkward, absurd and increasingly intimate attempt at preparing for parenthood.

As they stumble into something that looks suspiciously like a relationship, they begin to question the lives they thought they wanted and what they really mean to each other.
