A UWS nursing student has been shortlisted for a 'Student Nurse of the Year: Adult' award at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2026.
Jen Winch, a final‑year BSc Adult Nursing student, has been recognised for her commitment to compassionate, person‑centred care and outstanding academic and professional achievements throughout her degree.
Alongside her studies, Jen has contributed significantly to the wider student experience. She has served as both Student Representative and Divisional Representative at UWS, co‑founded the Paisley Nursing Society, and will soon take on the national role of Student Nursing Times Editor, where she will champion student voices across the UK.
The nomination highlights Jen's ability to advocate confidently for patients - combining clinical reasoning skills with a thoughtful, calm approach when supporting people during moments of vulnerability.
On the announcement, Jen said: “I’m incredibly proud to be shortlisted. When I think about my journey through the degree, this recognition feels really special.
"Every placement, patient and mentor has shaped who I’m becoming as a nurse, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received at UWS, including from my personal tutor, Jennifer Mack, and Cate O’Kane.”
Cate O’Kane, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Adult Nursing and Community Health, said: “This is a thoroughly deserved achievement. Jen approaches her learning and her practice with compassion, curiosity and professionalism. She consistently demonstrates strong clinical judgement and is deeply committed to advocating for patients. Jen is an excellent ambassador for UWS and for the profession.”

The nursing profession is in great hands with future nurses of the calibre of Jen, and on behalf of the School, I wish her all the best for the upcoming awards ceremony.”
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on Friday 24 April.
