Novosound
Strategy 2030 case study
UWS is the birthplace of one of Scotland’s most successful spinout companies: Novosound.
The award-winning ultrasonic imaging company has pushed the limits of ultrasound imaging and measurement to completely transform its use in a range of industries, from healthcare to energy.
Formed in 2018, Novosound developed a groundbreaking technique to mass-manufacture printable ultrasound sensors using thin film technology, which for the first time created a fully flexible, high resolution ultrasound sensor. The approach has addressed the limitations of traditional ultrasound and has paved the way for new products and customisable solutions for emerging markets and applications.
Ultrasound imaging, commonly known for its use in maternity wards and other hospital departments, is also extensively applied in industrial settings as a safe and non-destructive testing technique for revealing below-surface deformities, cracks or corrosion.
Novosound is set to expand its footprint in the Asia Pacific region, capitalising on recent client wins with global energy giants in the Middle East and North America.
The latest company breakthrough was developing the world’s first ultrasonic blood pressure monitor. This breakthrough allows for blood pressure monitoring in wearable devices, including smartwatches and smart rings, achieving accuracy levels comparable to conventional electronic cuff devices.
Spinout companies like Novosound will be integral to driving forward discovery in our recognised areas of research excellence and creating a hubs of innovation, creating impact locally and globally.
