St Mirren FC - partnering for community impact
Strategy 2030 case study
UWS and St Mirren Football Club have formalised their longstanding relationship with a partnership, demonstrating their shared commitment to community pride, and excellence in education and sport in Paisley.
The partnership brings together two of Paisley's key institutions to create real-world learning experiences for our students, support professional development for staff and enhance performance for St Mirren - both on and off the pitch.
At the heart of the collaboration is a shared belief in the power of sport and education to change lives. Over 30 UWS students have already taken part in immersive placements at St Mirren, gaining valuable hands-on experience for future careers in coaching, sports sciences, and performance analysis. With the chance to shadow professional coaching up close, students are getting a genuine feel for what a career in sport looks like.
And the impact stretches far beyond sport. UWS journalism students have supported the club's media activities, increasing capacity across the men's and women's first teams and the Academy, and contributing to the club's reach and voice in the local community.
For UWS, the partnership supports research and innovation across football operations, coaching techniques, and infrastructure, feeding directly into undergraduate and postgraduate projects that will influence real change within the club. For St Mirren, it's an opportunity to further enhance their practices across the club, with community spirit at the heart of it all.
The UWS and St Mirren partnership demonstrates the power of two leading organisations working together across a range of shared priorities. For UWS, the partnership encapsulates all three of our strategic goals: maximising our students’ success; creating and applying new knowledge and growing our global impact.
