The Foundation Academy workshops on offer this year cover Broadcast Production, Journalism, Filmmaking & Screen Writing, Performance and Commercial Music.

BA (Hons) Broadcast Production / Filmaking and Screen Writing / Journalism

The session will be delivered by a member of the UWS lecturing team in Broadcast Production who has extensive experience in the world of audio broadcasting as well as our audio technical assistant who is part of the Arts & Media Studio Team.

BA (Hons) Commercial Music

The session will be delivered by members of the UWS lecturing team in Commercial Music who have extensive experience in the music industry.

Making Money from Music

In this short session, staff from the BA (Hons) Commercial Music team at UWS will take you through the foundational principles of how money is made from music. We’ll look at the legal principle of copyright, how it works, and discuss how you may already have produced and own creative work which is eligible for copyright. From there, we’ll look at how owning creative work can lead to a range of sources of income for musicians, producers, and lyricists, and what you can do to make money from your music.

Below is some preparatory work to consider before you arrive at Lanarkshire, Paisley or Ayr campus.

In advance of this session, you are asked to think about the following, and make some notes to bring with you to the session:

  • Have you ever written a piece of music? How did you write / record it?
  • Have you ever co-written a piece of music with someone else? If so, did you have a conversation about who wrote what? Or who owns what percentage of the piece?
  • Have you ever played your own original music live before? If so, where did you play it?
