UWS Brough Lecture 2024 - ‘Why Leaders Should Embrace Auditors’

30 May 2024, UWS Paisley Campus

The University community is delighted that the annual UWS Brough Lecture will this year be presented by Anthony Garnett - international oversight professional, currently working for UNHCR as their Inspector General - on the theme of “Why Leaders Should Embrace Auditors.”

Taking place at our University of the West of Scotland Paisley campus on Thursday 30 May, Anthony Garnett's lecture will reflect on a career in accountancy, auditing and oversight across the private, public and university sectors in both the UK and internationally, and ultimately why leaders of all organisations - large and small - should embrace auditors and the audit process.

Register for Brough Lecture

Anthony Garnett is a British chartered accountant, chartered internal auditor, a qualified IT and risk management auditor and holds a Durham University MBA with distinction and prizes. He has had a long career in the public and private sector, having trained as a chartered accountant with KPMG in the UK, and has been a head of internal audit and investigations for over 17 years.

He is the Inspector General at UNHCR, the UN’s refugee agency. He was before that with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as the Director of the Office of Internal Audit and Investigations. Immediately prior, he was head of audit and counter fraud at UK HM Government’s Department for International Development and before that, Durham University. Alongside his day job, he has had a number of non-executive roles for national UK charities and educational institutions and is currently vice chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of the Global Fund in Geneva.

The UWS Brough Lecture 2024 will be held at the University’s Paisley Campus (High Street, Paisley PA1 2BE) on Thursday 30 May 2024 at 5.30pm, followed by an informal drinks and networking reception.

Registration for the Lecture is currently open. If you wish to register a place to attend, you must please book in advance via Eventbrite:

The University’s Brough Lecture commemorates Peter Brough, the 19th century Paisley philanthropist, who provided funds to establish the original Paisley Technical School, upon which University of the West of Scotland is based.
