Alternative Trusts and Scholarships
Whether they’re called trusts, scholarships, endowments, grants, or bursaries, there are many sources of funding that can help you during your studies.
Perhaps you aren’t eligible for student funding from the government, or maybe you’re interested in enhancing the government support you expect to receive. Whether you’re looking for additional support with your living costs, grants to pay tuition fees, or help to fund something more specific to your course, this page is a great place to start.
The funds detailed below are all external to the University. Due to the large number and wide variety of independent funding opportunities available we’re not able to offer bespoke advice about which fund/s you should apply to. This page focuses on how to begin your own research into which funds might be relevant to you.
Before you start exploring alternatives, it’s important to understand the statutory funding available, and the scholarships and bursaries on offer from UWS.
Searching for your own funds
Funding opportunities vary in value, from smaller contributions of £200, to larger amounts that could cover your tuition fees for a year. It’s important to understand that researching and applying for additional financial support will take time and effort.
Most students who achieve success with additional funding do so because they continually research and apply for everything they can - numerous grants of £200 can really add up! While there is no guarantee of finding suitable alternative funding, it is absolutely worth looking.
The majority of funds are competitive and attract many applicants, sometimes with only one award available. Similar to applying for a job, it’s important to take the time to carefully follow each fund’s guidance and think about how you can make your application stand out from the crowd.
The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding
The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding is a web resource that UWS subscribe to, making it free for our students and prospective students to use. It includes a funding database of over 600 charities and trusts, and access to comprehensive guidance on how to produce a high-quality application.
- Accessing this guide from a campus PC? You can automatically log in without creating an account.
- Already have a UWS email account? You can create an account in less than 30 seconds.
- Are you a prospective student? We understand you won’t be able to access our campus PCs nor will you have a UWS email address. Simply email the Funding and Advice Team at , and we will send you a PIN to access this resource.

We would advise you to take note of any key dates mentioned in the funding list, as some funds may provide more than one opportunity to apply each year.
External Funds
Below you’ll find information on a selection of funders who offer some form of financial support to students. These funding opportunities are entirely independent of UWS, and students must make their own judgements on how/whether to apply. This is not an exhaustive list, and you can continue your search for alternative funding elsewhere.
