Aircraft engineers are responsible for the safety of thousands of air passengers every year. They play a critical role in the design and certification of an airworthy aircraft in accordance with aviation standards.
The MEng (Hons) / BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering course will provide you with skills related to aircraft design, manufacturing, aerodynamic and structural design and to the repair and overhaul sectors.
Designed in partnership with aerospace industry employers, this course includes visits to organisations such as Spirit AeroSystems and British Airways. A number of final year projects are also undertaken in collaboration with industry.
The BEng (Hons) course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) under license from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the high standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK for Professional Engineering Competence (UKSPEC). The IMechE will be looking to extend accreditation up to and including the 2021 intake. Accreditaiton is being sought for the MEng (Hons) from both the IMechE and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
Career launch for star engineer
Katie Waddell left UWS with no less than four awards for excellence, ranging from top-performing engineering student to best final-year engineering design project for her work on wingtip aerodynamics.
Katie graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering in July, but she was already in a graduate role in April working with Orbital Access Limited, which is developing a horizontal launch system to send satellites into space.
Katie’s time at UWS helped her clarify what she wanted from a career in engineering and between third and fourth year, she organised herself a three week placement with Thales.
I really enjoyed my studies and it really helped to consolidate my education from university. The Aircraft Engineering course was very interesting, with a mix of practical laboratories, demonstrations and theory. The lecturers and course leader have an open-door policy and were always more than happy to help. The careers team are also fantastic.

What qualifications do you need?
We welcome Scottish, UK and international students and consider all applicants on an individual basis.
Don’t worry if your qualifications are not listed here, we take a range of factors into account when assessing your application and are happy to consider other alternative combinations of qualifications and experience.
Advanced entry is only possible to BEng (Hons) Years 2 and 3 of this course for suitably qualified applicants (see below). There are no advanced entry opportunities on the MEng (Hons) course.
Transferring to the MEng (Hons)
If you are initially registered and enrolled on the BEng (Hons) course, and meet the performance requirements in years 1, 2 and 3 you may be eligible to transfer onto the MEng (Hons) in Year 4.
International (non-EEA) applicants are advised that they will need to obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate before they can be considered for an unconditional offer of study on this undergraduate integrated masters course.
Entry Clearance Officers (ECO) will ask to see your ATAS certificate as part of your visa application process.
UK immigration law does not allow universities to permit international students to study for an ATAS applicable course until the student has supplied the university with all the relevant ATAS certificate details for their application.
BEng (Hons) only - advanced entry to Year 3 MEng (Hons) is not possible

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level. The qualifications below must have been gained within two years of the start of your course.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum English language requirements have the option to study one of our preparatory and pre-sessional English courses. The UWS courses available are:

Topics covered include the design of aerospace structures and systems, strength of materials, vibration theory, thermofluids, materials and manufacturing technology. The formal engineering design process and how it relates to aircraft engineering practice is introduced; as well as computer-aided design and information technology related techniques.
Applied statics and dynamics, materials and mathematics provide a foundation to engineering design. Professional and industrial studies are introduced alongside skills development in communications and IT technology.
Topics include design of aerospace structures and systems, strength of materials, vibration theory, materials and manufacturing technology. The formal engineering design process and how it relates to aircraft engineering practice is introduced; as well as computer-aided design and information technology related techniques.
Skills in design and applied mechanics are enhanced. Aerodynamics and aircraft performance; intelligent systems and control technologies; aircraft design and modelling; advanced computer-based analysis and simulation techniques are introduced, along with project management skills.
Year 4 (BEng Hons)
Aerodynamic understanding is enhanced whilst design, analysis and testing of composite structures is introduced. Computer-aided engineering design is explored further through finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics is introduced. Aircraft conceptual design and a major individual project complete the learning in Year 4.
Learn a Language (optional)
This course also gives you the option of taking a language module, which can count towards your degree. These modules cover multiple languages and range from absolute beginner to near-native speaker level. The cost of your language module is included in the tuition fees. Find out more

A shortage of aircraft engineers ensures that your skills will be in demand by aerospace companies locally, nationally and internationally, allowing you to take on roles in design, manufacture or maintenance. Career opportunities include junior management and aircraft technician roles, as well as structural aircraft design and maintenance.
Some graduates choose further study, leading to an MSc, PhD or teaching qualification.

The on-time application deadline for 2020/21 entry is 15 January 2020, 18:00 (UK time). For some courses it may still be possible to apply beyond this period, subject to suitable vacancies remaining. The final deadline for late applications via UCAS is 30 June 2020, 18:00 (UK time). Beyond this deadline, you may be able to apply via ‘UCAS Clearing’ if the course you are interested in has remaining places.
Students from non-EU/non-EEA countries can apply directly to UWS via our dedicated online application system.
