Scottish campuses open tomorrow (Monday 27 January)
Update - 26 January 2025
As we advised earlier this week, our Scottish campuses were closed to colleagues and students on Friday and over the weekend due to Storm Eowyn, and to allow maintenance assessments to be carried out across our estate following the extreme winds.
We can today confirm – as indicated in our previous communications – that our Scottish campuses will be operational as usual tomorrow (Monday 27 January). Campus users are asked to be mindful of any temporary, precautionary signage indicating any areas where maintenance work is ongoing.
Should any colleagues be experiencing any challenges with transport as a result of the impact of the weather, they should liaise directly with their line managers.
Our particular thanks to Estates & Campus Services and other colleagues for their tireless efforts on Friday and over the weekend, under very difficult conditions, to minimise disruption to our campuses. All colleagues are also reminded to be extra vigilant when returning to campus and that they can flag any ongoing issues via estates@uws.ac.uk.
As a reminder, you can follow the links below to find information on:
- Changing weather conditions, from the Met Office

Industrial Action - February/March 2020
INDUSTRIAL ACTION Q&A FOR STUDENTS
- Why is industrial action taking place?
You may have read recent media reports regarding national negotiations involving universities and trade unions. Earlier this month, the EIS union announced a programme of industrial action for university lecturers in five institutions across Scotland, including UWS.
- When is it happening?
The industrial action includes five days of industrial action at UWS, scheduled on Thursday 20 and Tuesday 25 February; and Monday 2, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 March.
- Will the University be open?
Yes, the University will remain open and we’re doing all we can to minimise disruption to learning and teaching.
- Will my classes or exams be cancelled and, if so, when will they be rescheduled?
During the industrial action, you should work on the basis that your studies will continue as normal, unless you are told otherwise. If any of your scheduled teaching time is cancelled, you should use available course resources on Moodle, which will provide you with your module(s) reading lists, learning resources and lecture notes. If your module(s) are cancelled, we will do everything to minimise disruption towards your learning experience, with module materials and learning resources available via each individual module Moodle site.
- Will my attendance at classes be monitored as normal?
Yes: providing your class is not cancelled and running as scheduled, attendance will be recorded.
- Will the strike affect my Tier 4 visa requirements?
No: the UK Government has specified that cancellation of classes will not impact on visa requirements.
- Should I submit my course work during industrial action?
You should aim to attend scheduled teaching, complete and submit assessments by the relevant deadlines, and continue to plan for any module assessments/tests. Where you have been set coursework, you should work towards submitting this on time via the Turnitin portal aligned to your module(s), and work on the assumption that normal penalties will continue to apply to late or non-submission of coursework.
- Will I receive my coursework feedback?
Every effort is being made to ensure your student experience is not affected by strike action. It is anticipated that feedback will be delivered within the expected timeframe.
- Will student support services be open?
Yes, all services will be open as normal. For information, you can email hub@uws.ac.uk or visit the Hub web page.
- Where can I get further information?
Please regularly check the MyDay student portal and your emails: if you have any questions, you can contact The Hub.

Exams
This page will post updates on any disruption to exams due to bad weather or other events. Again, your safety is the most important thing to consider when deciding whether to travel to an exam in severe weather.
If you decide it’s not safe for you to attend an exam, you should submit an Extenuating Circumstances Statement. Visit our Academic Appeals and Extenuating Circumstances page for further details.
Submitting coursework
If a campus is closed when you have an assignment due for submission, follow these guidelines.
- If your assignment is due to be submitted by hand, and the campus is closed for 24 hours or more, a new submission deadline will apply automatically. Usually this will be two working days after the campus reopens.
- If a module runs over more than one campus, the new submission date will apply to students on all campuses.
- If your assignment is due to be submitted electronically, you should still do so within the original deadline, unless you’re told otherwise through the module’s Moodle site.
- Generally, you should submit using Turnitin if your module leader has made it available. If not, submit by email to your module coordinator.
- Each module’s Moodle site will post specific instructions. Check it for information on new submission deadlines. This is especially important if your submission involves making a presentation, since a number of people will need to arrange new time slots.
