The key steps to applying for a Master's degree

Whether you want to specialise further in your current field, completely change your career path, or simply continue studying a subject you love, proper preparation is the secret to success. To help you get started on the right foot, we have put together our top tips for submitting a brilliant postgraduate application. 

1. Choose the right course for your goals 

It sounds obvious, but selecting the right programme is the most important step of the entire process. With over 80 postgraduate courses available at UWS, you have plenty of brilliant options to explore. 

Take your time and think carefully about your long-term career goals. What do you genuinely enjoy doing? What skills are you currently missing? Look closely at the specific modules and teaching styles for each course to make sure they match your ambitions perfectly. A little extra research now will pay off immensely when you begin your classes. 

2. Check the entry requirements early 

Before you start filling out any forms, double-check that you meet the specific entry requirements for your chosen course. Most postgraduate degrees will require you to hold an undergraduate degree from a UK institution, or an international equivalent. On occasion, your work experience or professional background may also be considered. 

If you are an international student, or if English is not your first language, you will also need to meet specific language requirements. Checking these details early gives you plenty of time to take any necessary tests or gather extra information. 3. Get your supporting documents ready 

Organisation is everything! When you apply through the UWS online application system, you will need to upload digital copies of some important documents. Gathering these in advance and saving them in one dedicated folder will save you loads of time and stress later on. 

Make sure you have: 

  • Your degree certificate(s) 
  • A copy of your academic transcript(s) 
  • Your English language proficiency test certificate (if applicable) 
  • At least one academic reference 

Your reference needs to be signed and on headed paper, or sent directly from your referee's work email account. Reach out to your tutors, managers, or a former lecturer early so they have plenty of time to write you a glowing recommendation. 

4. Don't be afraid to ask for help

Explain clearly why you are passionate about the subject, what you hope to achieve during the course, and how your previous studies or work experience make you a great candidate. Be clear, keep it concise, and let your personality show through. Always ask a friend or colleague to proofread it for spelling and grammar mistakes before you upload the final version.
