Paisley-based student Edmund Abekhe is hoping to build a successful career in the engineering industry thanks to the University’s career-focused Mechanical Engineering degree.
Edmund, 22, who is in fourth year of BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, decided to study at UWS due to its long history of excellence in the field of engineering.
Edmund said: “I already had it in mind to study mechanical engineering from a young age due to my family members who were also engineers. Growing up surrounded by engineers as well as being interested in the world of design and manufacture drove me on study Mechanical Engineering. I was keen to study at UWS due to its strong reputation in the area of engineering.”
One of the major benefits of the University’s Mechanical Engineering degree is its career-focused approach to learning.
He added: “As part of my degree I had the opportunity to work with a start-up company called BeYonder Ltd on designing an autonomous rover to be utilised within the manufacturing industry. Due to the constantly evolving world, Industry 4.0 is slowly becoming the norm within manufacturing industries, so the company was working at getting their foot into the door. I learnt a lot and was able to put into practice a lot of the knowledge I had acquired while studying at UWS. It helped me also grow to be able to efficiently manage my time and become accustomed to responsibility within the workplace.
“I would encourage anyone to study at UWS - it is a great University. The facilities are great and I urge all new students to immerse themselves in university life. Undergraduate life comes and goes very quickly and you should take advantage all the opportunities that come your way."

The University’s Mechanical Engineering degree focuses on industry-relevant topics to reflect the needs of today’s employers, giving students the opportunity to build a successful career in the design, engineering and manufacturing sectors.
This course will see students gain the knowledge of scientific and engineering principles and take a flexible approach towards new ideas and developments. Students hone their practical skills by using the University’s industry-standard equipment and software for computer-aided engineering design, analysis and manufacturing, making them attractive to prospective employers and enabling them to work effectively as part of a team.
