UWS course opens new doors for Franklin

As you would expect of a forensic scientist, international graduate Franklin Jacob Babu did his research before choosing to study at UWS.

Born and raised in Chennai, India, Franklin wanted to combine his interest in biology with his fascination for forensics. His detective work led him to UWS, and its unique BSc (Hons) course in Applied Bioscience with Forensic Investigation.

“I had already decided that I wanted to study in the UK,” says Franklin, “but when I met the UWS recruitment team, in Bangalore, I realised this course was the perfect fit for me.

“Arriving in a new country, I had to hit the ground running, both in terms of my studies, and building a new social circle, and UWS has been brilliant for that. Ever since I arrived, I have been involved in the life of the University, the students’ union, and student welfare issues.”

Franklin’s dedication was rewarded in 2017 when he was runner-up in the ‘Student of the Year’ category at the NUS International Student Awards, for his contribution to the experience of international students across UWS.

Currently taking a sabbatical, to serve as Vice President of Societies & Citizenship at the University’s Students’ Association, Franklin thinks his extra-curricular activities have been as important to his growth as his studies.

He says: “UWS is a very open and listening university and wants to hear the views of its students. The opportunities I’ve had here have been brilliant. I’ve gained multiple new skills and knowledge in different fields.”

Franklin has also put his academic skills into practice; undertaking a three-month internship at Glasgow Scientific Services, the city council’s Trading Standards and Environmental Health testing laboratory.

He is now considering taking his studies to PhD level and is also committed to continuing his work in the student and wider community.

“UWS, and Scotland, have been good to me, and I want to give something back.”
